Hong Kong in bid to bring the Gay Games to ‘Asia’s World City’ in 2022

Today, the Federation of Gay Games has announced a list of all of the prospective cities that intend to submit a bid to host the Gay Games in 2022. Out in HK is delighted to announce that Hong Kong has been included as the first Asian city ever to put in a bid to host the Gay Games.

This puts it on the list along 17 other cities, including: Anaheim, CA, Atlanta, GA, Austin, TX, Cape Town, ZA, Dallas, TX, Denver, CO, Des Moines, IA, Guadalajara, MX, Los Angeles, CA, Madison, WI, Minneapolis, MN, Salt Lake City, UT, San Antonio, TX, San Francisco, CA, Tel Aviv, IL, Washington, D.C.

We aim to bring the Gay Games to Asia for the first time. Over the course of the bidding process, Out in HK will seek to work with every possible stakeholder to articulate a compelling vision of mutual benefit for both the Gay Games and the city and citizens of Hong Kong.

About the Gay Games

The Gay Games is the world’s largest sporting and cultural event founded specifically for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) athletes, artists and musicians. It is an international sporting and cultural gathering that is open to anyone. The Gay Games was founded in San Francisco in 1982. In 2014, the Games were hosted in Cleveland Ohio and 10,000 athletes and performers from over 60 countries competed in 37 sports.

Why bid to host the Gay Games in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong is truly an iconic, world-class city. From the instantly recognizable urban landscape, to the harbour and mountains, Hong Kong can cater for every requirement of the Gay Games events. The unquenchable drive and spirit of our city will provide a unique atmosphere for the Games. The unrivalled transport infrastructure, wide range of sport facilities, entertainment venues and huge accommodation capacity will ensure a smooth and efficient experience for all.

“Participation, inclusion and personal best” are the core values of the Federation of Gay Games. We believe those values chime with the spirit of Hong Kong. We want to bring the Games to our city to showcase LGBT+ sporting and cultural organisations in a region where the community often lacks legal rights and protection. The Gay Games in Hong Kong will act as a beacon to promote an agenda of “equality and tolerance”, reaching out inclusively to everyone in the city.

What effect will the Gay Games have on Asia?

The rights of the LGBT+ community in San Francisco were very different in 1982 than they are today. Perhaps they were not so different from those experienced by the LGBT+ community across Asia now in 2016.

In it’s 40th anniversary, it is time to take the Gay Games back to its founding aims by planting a flag in fresh fields, where the promotion of its principles can have the greatest effect.

As “the Games that change the World” have played a part in changing attitudes in North America, Europe and Australia, we believe that it is time to bring this wonderful festival of tolerance and inclusion to Asia and to Asia’s World City; Hong Kong.

What is Out in HK?
